Self Care in Bible Study

A common thread running through many of the favorite books on self-improvement is the chapter on “Self Care in Bible Scripture”. It might not be surprising that self-care has become a vital part of our culture, since studies show that people who take care of themselves are happier, healthier and live longer. Unfortunately, as much of the world suffers from lack of self esteem, self-care has become the preserve of the rich and famous – with poor and working class folks struggling to keep their heads above water. Fortunately, we have been given the tools and knowledge necessary for everyone to learn how to master self care.

When God created us, he made us to be independent. We were designed to take care of ourselves, and to be satisfied with what we have. Self-mastery is one of the most important skills we can learn and there are many resources available today to help us get started. You don’t need to go it alone – there are many great courses and books out there to help you achieve this. One important factor of self-care is self-analysis. You may be surprised at just how much you spend time focused on yourself. The most important thing about self-care, however, is to simply remember to care for yourself. This does not mean that you have to take care of others in your life, but it does mean that you must do all you can to care for yourself. Self-care does not mean that you have to go without food, clothing, shelter, time with family and friends and time for hobbies and recreational activities. Remembering to care for yourself is the best way to ensure that you will be able to maintain a relationship with God as you grow and move through the stages of your Christian faith. It is a spiritual principle, and one that will stand you in good stead throughout your life.

There are many opportunities for people who are committed to self-care to find mentors and role models to help them grow. They can speak to both older Christians and those who are more young at heart. People of all ages are encouraged to seek relationships and mentors who have walked down the same path as they are now. There are even some great self care groups that you can join online. Sometimes all you really need is a friendly ear to talk to. Who knows, they may even have a few tips on how you can care for yourself better.

The journey to self-care in the Bible does not have to be difficult. When you find the support and encouragement you need, you will be able to flourish in every area of your life. Care for yourself does not have to take much extra effort on your part. Take a few moments today to reflect on what you can do to care for yourself, and the effect it would have on your life.
